The growing city of Waco is currently home to over 265,000 residents, more than double in population since 2010. Located about 70 miles south of Dallas along Interstate 35, Waco is considered the heart of Texas. What started as a small village in the 1800’s is now a booming city of business and tourism with more than 20,000 commuting to work in Downtown Waco every day. Waco offers a dynamic way of life for those who call the city home.

Waco is largely known as home to the Baylor Bears at the private university, but local Waco students are served by Waco Independent School District. The schools currently serve over 15,000 students in 15 Elementary Schools, 5 Middle Schools and 5 High Schools. A few Montessori and Private Schools are also available to Waco students.

Entertainment in Waco, TX

Baylor University offers sports fans year-round entertainment at McLane Stadium and the Ferrell Center. For those who enjoy retail therapy, Magnolia Market is located in the Silo District. Many travel from afar to visit the well-known Magnolia Market, which offers seasonal events, shopping, gardening, a restaurant and bakery.

From wineries and breweries to historic museums, a natural-habitat zoo, and numerous festivals, Waco offers entertainment in every aspect you could think of. History of Waco, TX

In March of 1849, the first block of Waco was laid out, and lots were sold for just $5. Lamartin was the townspeople’s original choice of name for the town, but it was later decided to call it Waco Village. By 1852, Waco was growing steadily and had its first churches and hotel, which served as the town’s postmaster. The town continued to grow as a cotton culture along the Brazos River, and by 1880 an estimated 12,000 residents called Waco home.

Fast forward 100 years and Waco’s population had grown to over 101,000, despite the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s. In the early 1990’s the city began to bring tourist dollars in by building Cameron Park Zoo and attracting the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Since that time, Waco has grown and become a tourist haven, largely due to the development of Magnolia Market and the surrounding district.
